I received the Birth Cert of Susannah Matilda Martin today and her Parents were James and Ann Martin (nee Harris). Also got the Marriage Certs of John Mount and Matilda Martin (It was the correct one) and his brother Joseph Edward Mount and Matilda's Sister Frances Amelia Martin.
The Father of both the Groom's was put in as Joseph Edward Mount . The girl's Father is James Martin - wood dealer of Ewell, Kent and John Mount is a Policeman living in New Brompton, Gillingham, Kent. That is where my Grandad was born and where he and Matilda lived.
On Matilda's birth cert her Father's occupation appears to be "Bavin Seller". Any idea what that is? Ruth Bowden bavin = scrap wood
In 1871 John was working as a Farm servant in Kingstone, Kent - Ecclesiastical District of Canterbury - Deaconery of Bridge.
He was aged 15yrs and working for a Howard Harvey - aged 31yrs - a Farmer of 325 acres (Employer of 7 men and 2 boys).

Dear Ms Bowden, I am in receipt of your letter of 21st October. Isn't the mail fast these days! I have searched through our candidates register, which is where all the applicants for the Kent County Constabulary are listed. I have been unable to find any Mount with the forename of John. This is not that unusual, as I have at other times found the candidates name in the personnel records, he having been omitted from the first register.
I have also checked the personnel file for 1874 to 1900, but there are only five Mounts listed, none of them with the name John as the first name, and none that would have fitted in with the dates you have given me, namely that he was in Gillingham in 1879 when he married, and that the 1881 census also
has him in Gillingham, I suspect that as you have him positively as a Kent police officer, he joined before 1874, and would have been in the personnel book for 1857 to 1874. Unfortunately that book has been missing from our archives for about twelve years, when someone borrowed it for research, and it was not returned. The senior registrar remembers it going out, but cannot recall who had it.
I am sorry that I am unable to assist you this time, but your letter will, of course, be kept on file, and if I come across any information relating to your G/Grandfather, I shall inform you then.
I wish you well in your research. Yours in friendship, John Endicott, Curator, Kent Police Museum,

great grandfather of Ruth Bowden ruthieb@bigpond.com - My Great Grand-Father was Police Constable 588T John Mount. He was originally stationed at Gillingham. I believe that he was badly injured in a Riot and that he later died as a result of those injuries. I am not sure of the time lapse between the riot and his actual death. I do know that he died on the 7th November 1887 and was buried in Fulham Cemetery on the 10th November 1887. I have a copy of the original Police Gazette of 1887 which states the death and burial dates.
Also went through the Police Gazette of 1887 that I have stashed away and it says that John Mount died in St Thomas's Hospital. The Funeral was taken by Mr Paul (Baptist Tabernacle) with the help of Mr Gooding Railway Missionary. Have you heard of any of these people? John Mount was Police Constable 588T at the Metro. Would that be the main Police Station as there is a list of Deaths and most of the others are from different areas. Ruth
Twynholm only formed in 1894 but Tasso Tabernacle in Greyhound Road Fulham started before us and I guess that may the one - especially as I believe they had some involvement in Railway Mission. And I know they are nearly 10 years older that we are. Trust you can try them - they now a struggling little fellowship. Details from the Metropolitan Police Museum:
There were Police Orders concerning Trafalgar Square in November 1887 following previous disturbances.
Two policemen died on 7 November 1887 - from C Division PC66212 Dore and from T station PC66483 Mount.
T Station is North Fulham and Walham Green.
In the "Nominal Return of Deaths during the year 1887" both William Dore and John Mount died of consumption, phthisis after 83 days off sick. This I reckon gives us Tuesday 16 August 1887 as his first day of sickness.
The handwritten return gives 66483 as John Mount's warrant number. There is the date 1.5.82 in the rank column - was his date of joining. It confirms again that he died 7 November 1887 - cause of death consumption after 83 days on the sick list.

Called Home
On November 7 our comrade and brother in the Lord, PC 588T John Mount fell asleep after a long illness from lung disease, in St Thomas Hospital. We know he lived for the Master during the last three years. When telling him, on November 2nd of our Bible class subject, Life, he said, "Ah life is to know God through Jesus Christ." We buried him on November. 10th at Fulham Cemetery, when about 40 police followed, and an impressive service was held by Mr. Paul (Baptist Tabernacle). Mr Gooding, railway missionary, also took part in the service. J.M.
Also found a photo (with the bottom torn off - my Mum was no sentimentalist) of Matilda and John Edward aged about 7yrs (he is the one with only ½ a face on the photo, so you cant really see him). The Photographer is :- Enrico Gabrielli - Exeter House Studio, Walham Green, S.W. Just thought I'd tell you for the hell of it, ha, ha. So John and Matilda must have lived in the area. Ruth.

I received John Mount's Death Cert this morning the cause of Death below Phthisis Pulmonary Asphysia (Asphyxia?) That fellow that emailed me this morning said it was Consumption (TB). Do you think that is is what the above means? It was certified by S.H Jones (?J), MRCS. The informant was Fred Walker, Steward, St Thomas's Hospital, Lambeth. Before he was put in the hospital he was living at 67 Chesilton Road, Fulham. John Mount's number was PC66483 on T division of the Met. I wonder why they had it as 588T in the Gazette? Ruth. 13.9.2001
I visited the cemetery today and had a cup of tea with the parks police. The cemetery is now a garden of rest and only has about 6 burials every year in family plots. Many of the headstones have been removed to allow for easier maintenance and with a view to reclaiming plots and starting further burials some time in the future. I got a telephone number from the police officer and rang Hammersmith town hall. The young lady there was very helpful. She said a John Mount late of Chesilton Road was buried on 10th November 1887 aged 31 years so this is the right person. Apparently he was buried in common grave number 11 H 7. She said it is likely that there was never a headstone erected but we might be lucky. When next up that way I will call in at the town hall for a plan of the cemetery and go see if the grave is still there. Chesilton Road still exits and is within a mile of the cemetery. It runs off the Fulham Road which is a desirable London location with property prices in some parts on the £500,000 mark. Do you have a number and I can get a photo of the house. You might also wish to check the census for 1881 and 1891 to see if this gives you further information. I'm not sure if there are any sites on the net where you can do this. I looked in the atlas for the road name you mentioned but found nothing similar. Will update you in due course. Peter
