    Then there was Mrs Featherstonehaugh
A very conspicuous figure in Barking about our title date. Although Barconians could not easily call her by her full name, for she was more generally spoken of as Old mother Fetherston, this did not mean a term of reproach; “Old mother” was applied to most working females of matronly age. We are aware too, of the charitable character of the worthy lady “Old mother Hubbard,” certain it is old mother Fetherstone would have given any poor dog a bone even if it were a fish bone and more suitable to cats, for the lady was a vendor of fish. She was an ample person. And the sailor man might well have sung of her, as lie did to the lady of his choice in a Comic Opera at the time
‘You shall be my Clipper built yacht,
Broad at the brain and snug and taut,
And It be your rough honest tar, &c.”
(Jr of whom Captain Corcoran of “H.M.S. Pinafore” might well have said
    “A Plump and pleasing person,”
    as he did of “Buttercup.”
Mrs. Fetherston then was the Barking Fish woman. A celebrated painter has depicted such an one, although his name has escaped me,
With hands resting on her lips, basket full of fish poised on her bead, she strode along the pathway with a considerable amount of fishwomanly dignity.
As you would have found out, had you ventured to disparage the quality of the fish she offered for sale, a thing unlikely to happen for Mrs. Featherston fish was generally excellent.
“Shall we have a piece of fish for dinner to-day” asks the Barking housewife at breakfast.
“We’ll wait and see what mother Fetherston has.”
Mrs. F. had a shop in East Street where her full name appeared on the facia as Fetherstonhaugh.
Whether she could claim descent from the great English family of this name one never knew, but gossip had it that she could, such a name would not go unnoticed and a certain amount of mystery was always associated with the imposing Fetherstonhaugh on the façade.
for dried fish, especially bloaters, one waited upon Sally Rushbrook whose shop has only lately disappeared. How Sally made a living at all, was a surprise to many for the whole of her stock would not have sold for twenty shillings. There were many such at Barking in 1866. It would be hard indeed to live under similar conditions nowadays, but at our date wants were few, rents low, and goods obtained in very small quantities at a time, thus capital need not have been large, in any case it was done. Sally, like others, lived and thrived in North Street for many years.
    Hamlet; “You are a fishmonger?”
    Polonius: “Not I, my lord,”
Hamlet: “Then I would you were so honest a man.”
