WO97/1149/67 - transcription of the document at Kew:
Discharge of Thomas Featherstone Corps of Royal Sappers and Miners

the board report that Private Thomas Featherstone, by trade a shoemaker of Bromley, Kent and was attested for the Royal Regiment of Sappers and miners at Woolwich in the County of Kent on the 13th January 1846 at the age of 20 years and 1 month that after making every deduction required by Her Majesty's Regulations, the Service up to the 12th day of October 1852 which he is entitled to reckon, amounts to 6 years, 273 days, as shewn by the detailed statement on the second page; during which period he served abroad two and 4/12 years, viz. at Gibraltar 5 months Halifax NS one year 11 months.

His discharge is proposed in consequence of epileptic fits.

With regard to the character and conduct of Private Thomas Featherstone the board have to report that upon reference to the Defaulter's Book, and by the Parole testimony he has been given, it appears that he has never been tried by a court Martial - that he became entitled to one penny per diem good conduct pay and one distinguishing mark for good conduct on the 19th May 1852 of which he has since been uninterruptedly in possession - and that his general character is very good.

      Period of Service
Royal Sappers and Miners Rank - Private - from 13th January 1846 to 12 October 1852 6 years 273 days.

      Medical Report
In 1847 when employed at Sandhurst instructing the Cadets in field works he had two fits. In October 1850, at Gibraltar immediately after running some distance to his barracks to get in by roll bell he suffered a fit of an epileptic nature followed by two others, for which he was invalided home. In July last he was again sent to England from Halifax Nova Scotia having had four attacks of a similar nature. Some of which were witnessed by the medical officer. Although he has had no fit since March there is every probability of a reoccurrence of the disease upon ::: to earlier causes.

Opinion of the Principal medical officer at Woolwich 8 September 1852. After a careful examination am of the opinion that Thos. Featherstone is unfit for service: likely to be permanently disqualified from military duties but that he is able to earn a livelihood.

Woolwich 23 September 1852 the discharge of the man mentioned above is Approved by the Master General.
