      To the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor in the Parish of Pembury in the Said County to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Brenchley in the Said County.

      Whereas complaint hath been made unto us whose hand and seal are hereunto set, two of his majesty’s justices of the peace for the said county/ ? ? By you the Churchwardens of the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Pembury aforesaid that Arthur Featherstone and Deborah his wife came lately into the said Parish of Pembury and there now remaine endeavouring to gain a Settlement contrary to law not having by any wair’ed or means gained a Settlement there And that the Said Arthur Featherstone and Deborah his wife are likely to become chargeable to the Said Parish of Pembury. An it appeareth unto us the Said Justices upon the examination of the Said Arthur Featherstone upon oath that his last legal Settlement is in the Parish of Brenchley aforesaid And the Officers of Brenchley being duly summoned to appear this third day to make their defence against the Settlement of the Said Arthur Featherstone and Deborah his wife who appearing accordingly and having nothing ? to allege.
      We therefore the Said Justices having duly considered aforesaid County adjudge that the Said Arthur Featherstone and Deborah his wife are likely to become chargeable to the said Parish of Pembury And that the Parish of Brenchley is their last legal Settlement.

      ? are therefore in his majestys name strictly to charge and command you the Said Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Pembury aforesaid that you some or one of you do forthwith remove and convey the Said Arthur Featherstone and Deborah his wife out of and from your Parish of Pembury to the Said Parish of Brenchley that being the Place of the last Legal Settlement of the Said Arthur Featherstone And there to deliver them together with this our order or a fresh copy thereof unto the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of Brenchley aforesaid or to some or one of them who are hereby required and commanded to restrict them to the Said Arthur Featherstone and Deborah his wife into their Said Parish of Brenchley and there Provide for them (if need or required) ease of ? not Given under our hands and sealed the eighteenth day of October ano dom 1728

      Know all men by these Presents that we Arthur Featherstone of Brenchley in the county of Kent husbandman and John Featherstone of Capel in the county aforesaid husbandman am held and firmly Bound to Richard Gibbon and John Apps the now Churchwardens of the Parish of Brenchley in the County aforesaid and to James Thorn and Alex Barham Overseers of the Poor of the Same Parish in the sum of one hundred pounds of good and lawful money of Great Britain to be paid to the said Churchwardens and Overseers, or either of them, their or either of their Certain Attorney Executors, Admons, Successors or Assigns for the true and faithful payment whereof we bind ourselves or our and every of our Heirs, Executors and Admons firmly by these Present sealed with our seals, Dated the twenty fifth day of January in the first year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of god of Great Britain France and Ireland King defender of the faith and so forth and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty one

      Thereas the above bound John Featherstone stands charged by one Sarah Hartnup late of this Parish of Brenchley above named single woman and now lately deceased to be the putative father of a Male Bastard Child lately born of her body which is chargeable to the Inhabitants of the Said Parish of Brenchley. Now the condition of this Obligation above written is such that if the above bound Arthur Featherstone and John Featherstone or either of them or any of their Heirs, Executors, and Admons, shall and do well and truly pay or cause to be paid from the twenty seventh of August last past from the Date hereof to the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Brenchley and their successors for the time being one shilling a week to be paid monthly and towards the maintenance and Bringing Up of the Said Bastard Child so long as shall or maybe chargeable to the aforesaid Inhabitants or until the Said Bastard Child is or shall be able to provide for himself or shall die That then this obligation above written to be void and of none effect or else to Remain in full force power and virtue.

      Wee his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the County of Kent assembled at the General Quarter Sessions of the Peace of our Lord the King holden by Adjournment at Maidstone in and for the said County on Thursday the sixteenth Day of February in the fourth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third by the Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith and so forth And in the year of our Lord One Thousand seven hundred and sixty four Do humbly certify to your Lordship that on Friday the nineteenth Day of August last past there happened in the parishes of Sundridge, Speldwich, Penshurst, Pembury, Tudeley, Capel,

      Who by reason of their … …. seek no relief for this application) of (including many others) Arthur Feverstone, John Feverstone in the parishes aforesaid as in a very short time to beat cut down strip lay waste and destroy all or the greatest part of the corn grain hops fruit and other things then standing growing and being in and upon the said Lands and grounds of the said several sufferers That the truth of the premises hath been made appear unto us in our said sessions in open court as well upon the Oaths of almost all the said sufferers (those who did not make Oath thereof being unable to attend the said sessions by reason of their Great age Illness or some other just cause) as also upon the Oaths of several persons who are Inhabitants within the said several parishes and who are skilfull and experienced Farmers and Husbandmen and are well acquainted with the said premises before the said Accident happened and have carefully Viewed the same and made Estimates of the Losses Occasioned thereby which are moderately computed and amount together in the whole to the sum of Twelve Thousand seven hundred Ninety eight pounds seven shillings and three half pence That all or the Greatest part of the said sufferers are tenants at rack Rents and are by their loss severally reduced to great Want and Distress All which they have brought?
