He used Hackney on his first wedding certificate but I have not been able to trace his birth certificate to help me on to his parents. Can you assist at all, please, with a source? 9 January 2022 I am Henry’s grandson, Cyril’s son. I am not sure you have got the right birth because he told me he was born illegitimate and spent some time in Dr Barnardo's! However, he was not renowned for telling the truth about his origins and I think some of the facts on his marriage certificate to my grandmother, Martha Ellen Hayman were not entirely accurate. Did the Aldridge birth certificate give a fathers name or profession? 11 January 2022 My grandmother, Martha Ellen Hayman, who married Henry Walter is the line that goes back to Dawlish, Torrington and Torquay and I am back to 1800 with that branch - but they are not Featherstones! I knew my grandfather and he has a fascinating background: born in London, worked in the South Wales coal mines, sent to prison for stealing chickens after his wife died, leaving him with 6 children under 16 to care for. He then walked back to London during the General Strike, having been blacklisted by the mine owners for Trade Union activities. He married twice, so I have quite an extensive family!
