      On Geoffrey's brief service records his next of kin is shown as Miss E. M. Featherstone of 39 Canadian Avenue, Catford, London SE6 so presumably they were engaged to be married. This serves as a poignant reminder of how many young women at the end of
      conflict found themselves with no prospect of marriage as so many young men had perished. As I do not know Miss Featherstone's first name I have been unable to find her roots but I suspect she was Miss Ethel May Featherstone shown on the 1911 census as an 18 year old college student born 1893. The daughter of Albert Featherstone who was a buyer in wholesale drapery. It would appear if I am correct that she did not marry until the age of 33 in 1925 when she married Henry Walter Scothon who was at 66 years twice her age. This rather confirms the lack of suitable younger men so better to marry in desperation than to be an old maid. There are two other listed marriages around this time for an Ethel May Featherstone so we may never know which one is correct.
