I cannot find her on the 1861 census so it's my belief that Elizabeth Featherstone is in fact my Ann Elizabeth Walker and that her mother is "keeping up appearances". Ann Elizabeth did exactly the same thing when she had an illegitimate child and then married. I have sent for William and Ann's marriage cert. today. Madeleine Wellings igwellings@ntlworld.com 8 September 2005 the Elizabeth Featherstone shown on the 1861 census is definitely Ann's daughter Ann Elizabeth born Tonbridge Union in 1851 in August (hence she would be 9 on 1861 census). No father given and she is shown as Ann Walker in 1871 and marries as Ann Elizabeth Walker. My father remembers Ann Elizabeth and says she was an old witch who flicked a cat o'nine tails at the children when they passed her house. She was his grandmother! His father ran away and joined the army to get away from her. I have contacted David Martin. the email address you gave dmart@blueyonder.co.uk was bounced. Mary Roots (b. 1794 Brenchley) One of their daughters was Ann Walker (b. 1830 Brenchley) She gave birth to a daughter out of wedlock named Ann Elizabeth Walker (aka Annie or Elizabeth) (b. 1851 Brenchley) Ann Elizabeth (under the name of Annie) gave birth to James (b. 1872 Tonbridge). the father is not listed on the birth certificate. That same year she married Philip Pope. James Walker became James Pope on the 1881 census. On the birth certificate of "Elizabeth" she was born on 4th August 1851 at the Union workhouse, Tonbridge. She is registered as Ann Elizabeth no father mother Ann Walker. Ann registered her on 14th August whilst still in the workhouse. the registrar was Wm Ware. Registration district Tonbridge, Sub district Tonbridge. Certificate no.394. "Elizabeth" gave birth to my Grandfather James Walker at the Workhouse Tonbridge on April 9th 1872.father unknown. She then in November of that same year married a Philip Pope at St Andrews Paddock Wood and went on to have 8 children (that I have traced there may be more!!)Philip died in 1899 of Influenza aged 60.
