Mr. Scott reports from the Council of State, a Letter from Shrewsbury, from Colonel Mackworth, of the * Day of *: With the Resolutions given by the Court Martial, holden at Chester in the County of Chester, the First of October 1651, upon James Earl of Derby, Sir Timothy Fetherston Haugh, and Captain John Benbowe, therein inclosed: Which were this Day read.

      Dictionary of National Biography
Sir Timothy Fetherstonhaugh (d 1651), royalist, was son of Henry Fetherstonhaugh of Kirkoswald, Cumberland, high sheriff of that county 10 James I, who was second son of Albany Fetherstonhaugh of Fetherstonhaugh, Northumberland, by his wife Lucy, daughter of Edmund Dudley of Yanworth, Westmoreland. His mother was Dorothy daughter of Thomas Wybergh of Clifton, Westmoreland (Pedigrees in Hutchinson Cumberland i 207; Burke Landed Gentry 7th edit i 633). In 1620 he was admitted a member of Gray's Inn (Harl MS 1912 f31) He was knighted at Whitehall 1 April 1628. During the civil war he liberally contributed money to the royal cause, raised troops at his own expense; and served in the field. In 1642 he marched with Sir William Hudleston to Charles in York, having under him three hundred foot. In February 1644 he left Oxford with introductions from the king and Lord Digby for Ireland, where he applied to Ormonde to send troops for the relief of Cumberland (Carte Ormonde (1851) v12 vi 248). At the battle of Wigan Lane, Lancashire 26 Aug 1651 he was taken prisoner, and after triall by court martial at Chester he was beheaded in that city, 22 Oct, despite his plea that he had quarter for life given him (Carte His of England iv 652). He married Bridget, daughter of Thomas Patrickson of Caswell How in Ennerdale, Cumberland. Two of his sons were slain at the battle of Worcester 3 Sept 1651; the elder, Henry had been knighted on the field there. The family's losses amounted, it is said to 10,000l. In June 1661 two other sons, Philip and John, were obliged to petition for places as pages to the queen 'to lessen the charges of their mother, who was brought very low by the late times' (Cal State Papers, Dom 1661-2 p1). The petition was granted. These appointments and the present of a portrait of Charles 1 are said to have been the only recompense the family received. In the chancel of Kirkoswald Church is a monument to the memory of Sir Timothy erected by his grandson Thomas. His portrait is given in the frontispiece of Winstanley's 'The Loyall Martyrology,' 1665 from which an enlarged engraving was published in octavo.

Notes for Timothy Featherstonehaugh, Sir, Knt., Kirkoswald:
Sir Timothy Fetherstonhaugh, Knight of Kirkoswald raised a troop of horse for King Charles I and fought for King Charles II at the Battle of Worcester. He was beheaded by Cromwell's part on October 22, 1651.
In the Featherstone Society's "Featherstone Family News" letter, Volume 1, Issue 10, Summer 1999, in an article submitted by Tony Jones (member no. 11) entitled "Royalist or Roundhead," Tony gives an account of Sir Timothy Fetherstonhaugh, grandson of Albany Fetherstonhaugh of Featherstone Castle. He states that Sir Timothy's father, Henry, was a younger son and who founded the branch of the family who settled at Kirkoswald in Cumberland and who are still there.Timothy is said to have been a member of Grays Inn in 1620 and was knighted at Whitehall in 1628. Sir Timothy is said to have been a strong royalist supporter, a cause which almost led the family into penury/poverty, because he financially contributed an amount of 10,000 pounds, and raised a company of 300 foot soldiers to join King Charles I at York in 1642.Tony sites that the "Dictionary of National Biography" says that in 1644, he was sent by the King and Lord Digby to Ireland to appy for troops to relieve Cumberland.Elizabeth and Hans Meier in their book "The Featherstones of England:A Family History" have him back in England as part of the defence of Carlisle under Sir Thomas Glenham in 1644-1645. In 1649, King Charles I was executed. In January 1651, Charles II was crowned King at Scone and during the first half of the year fought a messy campaign against Cromwell in Scotland. The article by Tony goes on to state that King Charles II marched south with Cromwell in August of 1651 and that he was in Penrith by August 8th, at Wigan on August 15th, and reached Warrington on August 16th. At Wigan on the night of August 26th 1651, the parliamentarians are said to have attacked Sir Timothy's forces and he was captured. He was court martialled at Chester, found guilty and, despite pleading that he had been given quarter for his life, was beheaded there in front of the Abbey gate on October 22, 1651.A monument to him, was raised by his grandson Thomas, and is located in the chancel of Kirkoswald Church.
Tony also states in his article that two of Sir Timothy's sons were with the King's forces and marched with him to Worcestor. The elder [son], Henry aged 27, was knighted on the field before both [sons of Sir Timothy] were killed in the battle of September 3, 1651, which was the end of Charles II's campaign. In July 1651, Tony says; two of Sir Timothy's surviving sons petitioned for, and were granted, positions as pages to the Queen in order "to lessen the charges of their mother, who was brought very low by the late times."It is said, that these appointments and a present of a portrait of [King] Charles I are the only recompense received by the family for their faithful service to the crown.
